MUCUS, a mucilaginous liquor secreted by certain glands, and serving to lubricate many of the internal cavities of the body. In its natural state it is generally limpid and colourless; but, from certain causes, assumes a thick consistence and a whitish colour like pus. For the distinguishing characters between pus and mucus, see CHEMISTRY, No 2769.
