NYON, a considerable town of Switzerland, in the canton of Bern, and capital of a bailiwick of the same name, with a castle. It stands delightfully upon the edge of the lake of Geneva, in the very point where it begins to widen, and in a most charming country commonly called Pays de Vaud. It was formerly called Colonia Equestris Novodunum; and, as a proof of its antiquity, several Roman inscriptions, and other ancient remains, have been frequently discovered in the outskirts of the town. E. Long. 5. 10. N. Lat. 46. 24.
