39. 55. ORIXA or ORISSA, a province of the Deccan in Hindostan, extending from the 16th to the 23d degree of north latitude, on the west side of the bay of Bengal. Its length from S. W. to N. E. is about 530 miles, its average breadth 90. The interior is wild, rugged, and uncultivated; but the coast is generally fertile and well inhabited. The Ooreas who live within the company's jurisdiction are a quiet and inoffensive people; but those who inhabit the interior are fierce and warlike. The population of the province is supposed to be four millions and a half, but is very unequally spread over the surface of the country. Three fourths of the territory are possessed by the British, the remainder by various petty native chiefs. The temple of Juggernaut is in this province.
