CYTHERA, -orum, in Ancient Geography, an island opposite to Mallea, a promontory, and to Boize a town of Laconia. The island was sacred to Venus, with a very ancient temple of that goddess exhibited in armour at Cythera, as in Cyprus. It is now called Cerigo, and forms one of the seven Ionian islands. See IONIAN ISLANDS, SUPPLEMENT.
