COGGLE, or COG, a small fishing-boat upon the coasts of Yorkshire: and cogs (cogones) are a kind of little ships or vessels used in the rivers Ouse and Humber; (Stat. 23 Hen. VIII. c. 18.). Preparatis cogonibus, galleis, et aliis navibus, &c. (Mat. Paris, ann. 1066.) And hence the cogmen, boatmen, and seamen, who, after shipwreck or losses by sea, travelled and wandered about to defraud the people, by begging and stealing, until they were restrained by proper laws.
