MAXIMILIAN I. emperor of Germany, signalized himself against the French while he was king of the Romans, and after he was emperor entered into the army of Henry VIII. of England as a volunteer against that nation: he was a protector of learned men, and abolished an iniquitous tribunal, styled Judicium occultum Westphalie; he composed some poems, and the memoirs of his own life. He died in 1519, aged 60.
