ALAIS, a considerable town of France, in the department of Gard, and formerly the province of Languedoc, situated on the river Gard, at the foot of the Cévennes. The Jesuits had a college in this place; and a fort was built here in 1689. It is 34 miles north of Montpellier, and 340 from Paris. E. Long. 4. 20. N. Lat. 44. 8. Population 7802 in 1815.
