GARONNE, Upper, a department in the south of France. The south part extends to the Pyrenees, and is rugged and mountainous: the north part has a hilly or undulating surface. It produces corn, wine, olives, silk, figs, almonds, and abounds in pasturage. The mountains contain mines of copper, lead, iron, and coal. The population in 1815 was 367,000. Toulouse is the chief town.
