PEST, a town of Hungary, and now the capital of the kingdom. It is situated on the Danube opposite Buda, with which it communicates by a bridge of boats. It is the seat of the supreme courts of justice, of the offices of government, and of a well endowed university. The latter has a good museum and library. There are also here an hospital for invalids, and a theatre. The streets are spacious, and the houses generally handsome: the number of inhabitants is estimated at 42,000.
