RHEIMS, a city of France, in the department of Marne, which contained 31,295 inhabitants in 1800. It is one of the most ancient and celebrated places in the kingdom, had an archbishop's see, whose archbishop was

a duke and peer of France. It is about four miles in circumference, and contains several fine squares, well-built houses, and magnificent churches. It had a mint, an university, and five abbey, the most famous of which is that of St Remy. There are also several triumphal arches and other monuments of the Romans.
