CALCULUS Literalis, or Literal CALCULUS, is the same with specious arithmetic, or algebra, so called from its using the letters of the alphabet, in contradistinction to numeral arithmetic, which uses figures. In the literal calculus given quantities are expressed by the first letters, , , , ; and quantities sought by the last, , , , &c. Equal quantities are denoted by the same letters.
