CAPER also denotes a vessel used by the Dutch for
cruising and taking prizes from the enemy; in which
sense, caper amounts to the same with privateer. Ca-
pers are commonly double officered, and crowded with
hands even beyond the rates of ships of war, because
the thing chiefly in view is boarding the enemies.
