JURA, a department in the east of France. It takes its name from Mount Jura, and contains 2050 square miles, and 300,000 inhabitants. It is rather hilly in general, but yields corn, wine, hemp, maize, and has mines of iron, copper, lead, and pit-coal. Lions le Saulnier is the chief town.
