HYSTERIC AFFECTION, or Passion, (formed of ὑῖκος, "womb"); a disease in women, called also suffocation of the womb, and vulgarly fits of the mother. It is a spasmodico-convulsive affection of the nervous system, proceeding from the womb; for the symptoms and cure of which, see MEDICINE.
