BEFORT, a small town of France in the department of Upper Rhine. It was ceded to France by the treaty of Westphalia in 1648. It contains nearly 5000 inhabitants, and is important on account of the great road by this place from Franche Comte. The fortifications were greatly augmented by Louis XIV.
