BERG, St Winow, a town of the Low Countries, in the country of Flanders, fortified by Vauban, and subject to France. It is seated on the river Colme, six miles from Dunkirk, and 21 from Ypres. The air is often very unwholesome, especially to strangers. The river Colme serves instead of a canal to go to Hondshot, St Omer's, and Gravelines. There is likewise another canal to go to Dunkirk. The villages in its territory are very famous for butter and cheese, of which they send a great quantity to Flanders. Fort Lapin and Fort Suisse are within cannon shot of this place, and Fort St Francis is seated on the canal, near three miles from the town. E. Long. 2. 25. N. Lat. 50. 57.
