AUDITORIUM, in the ancient churches, was that part of the church where the audientes stood to hear and be instructed.
The auditorium was that part now called navis ecclesie*. In the primitive times, the church was so strict in keeping the people together in that place, that Navis, the person who went from thence in sermon-time, was ordered by the council of Carthage to be excommunicated.
