AXMINSTER, a town of Devonshire, situated on the river Ax, in the great road between London and Exeter, in W. Long. 3. 15. N. Lat. 50. 40. It was a place of some note in the time of the Saxons, and contained 2387 inhabitants in 1811. Here is a considerable manufactory of broad and narrow cloths, carpets, cotton tapes, druggets, and leather articles.
