BANARES, or BENARES, a town of Hindostan, greatly celebrated for its sanctity, and being the university of the Indian Bramins. It is seated on the north side of the river Ganges, and contains nearly 600,000 inhabitants. E. Long. 82. 30. N. Lat. 26. 20. See OBSERVATORY.
