ZUTPHEN, a strong and considerable town of the province of Guelderland, in the kingdom of the Netherlands, and capital of a county of the same name. It has a magnificent church, and is surrounded with walls. It was taken by the French in 1672, who in 1674 delivered it up to the States-General. It is seated at the confluence of the rivers Berkel and Yessel, nine miles south-east of Deventer, and 55 east by south of Amsterdam. E. Long. 6. 0. N. Lat. 52. 10.
