ABELLINUM, anciently a town of the Hirpini, a people of Apulia; distant about a mile from the rivulet Sabato, between Beneventum and Salernum. Pliny calls the inhabitants Abellinates, with the epithet Protopi, to distinguish them from the Abellinates Maris. Now Avellino. E. Long. 15. 20. N. Lat. 21°.
