ADELSCALC, in Ancient Customs, denotes a servant of the king. The word is also written adelfscache, and adelfscalcus. It is compounded of the German anel, or adel, "noble," and scalc, "servant." Among the Bavarians, adelfscalc appear to have been the same with royal thanes among the Saxons, and those called miniistri regis in ancient charters.
