MONTÉ-SANTO, formerly called Mount Athos, a mountain of Turkey in Europe, on the gulf of Contessa. It is called Monte-Santo, or the Holy Mount, because there are 22 monasteries thereon, in which are 4000 monks, who never suffer a woman to come near them. It is 17 miles south of Salonichi. E.
