NARCOTICS, in Medicine, soporiferous drugs,
which bring on a stupefaction. Among narcotics the
most eminent are those usually prepared for medicinal
uses from the poppy, especially opium; as also all
those prepared from mandragoras, hyoscyamus, stramo-
