CARTHAGENA, a sea port town of Spain, in the kingdom
Carthamus kingdom of Murcia, and capital of a territory of the same name; built by Aedrubal, a Carthaginian general, and named after Carthage. It has the best harbour in all Spain, but nothing else very considerable; the bishop's fee being transferred to Toledo. In 1706 it was taken by Sir John Leake: but the duke of Berwick retook it afterwards. W. Long. o. 58. N. Lat. 37. 36.
