CALCULUS Literalis, or LITERAL CALCULUS, is the same with specious arithmetic, or algebra, so called from its using the letters of the alphabet; in contradistinction to numeral arithmetic, which uses figures. In the literal calculus given quantities are expressed by the first letters, ; and quantities sought by the last , &c. Equal quantities are denoted by the same letters.
