CAMPBELTOWN, a parliament town of Argyleshire in Scotland, seated on the eastern shore of the peninsula of Kintyre or Cantyre, of which it is the capital. It hath a good harbour; and is now a very considerable place, though within these 50 years only a petty fishing town. It has in fact been created by the fishery: for it was appointed the place of rendezvous for the busses; and above 260 have been seen in the harbour at once. The inhabitants are reckoned to be upwards of 8000 in number. W. Long. 5. 10. N. Lat. 54.
