PROPRIETOR, or PROPRIETARY, is he who possesses any thing as his own in the utmost degree. Such monks were called proprietary as had reserved goods and effects to themselves, notwithstanding their formal renunciation of all at the time of their profession. They are frequently mentioned in the Monast. Anglie. &c. and were to be very severely dealt with; to be excommunicated, deprived of burial, &c. Monachi proprietarii excommunicentur ab abbatibus: et, si in morte proprietarius inventus fuerit, ecclesiastica careat sepultura, &c. Addit. ad Matt. Par.
