JALEMUS, in antiquity, a kind of mournful song, used upon occasion of death, or any other affecting accident. Hence the Greek proverbs had their original, alemos engeris, or psangeris, i. e. were sad or colder
than a jalemus, or the mournful psangeris, worthy to be ranked among jalemus.
