Kirkoswald from London, stands near the Ribble, six miles from the Irish sea, in that part of the county called the Field lands. It has a market and three fairs, and a free school well endowed. By means of inland navigation, it has a communication with the rivers Merley, Dee, Ribble, Ouse, Trent, Darwent, Severn, Humber, Thames, Avon, &c. which navigation, including its windings, extends above 100 miles, in the counties of Lincoln, Nottingham, York, Westmorland, Chester, Warwick, Leicesters, Oxford, Worcester, &c.
