PEEBLES, a royal borough and county town of Peebles-shire or Tweedale, is situated on the banks of the Tweed, 22 miles south from Edinburgh. Peebles was a royal residence in the time of James I. of Scotland; and here it is supposed, he composed the poem of "Peebles at the Play." Peebles has considerable woolen manufactures, and is noted for excellent beer. Population in 1793 amounted to 1480 inhabitants.
