BAILIFF, in Scots Law, a judge anciently appointed by the king over such lands not erected into a regality as happened to fall to the crown by forfeiture or otherwise, now abolished. It is also the name of a magistrate in royal boroughs, and of the judge appointed by a baron over lands erected into a barony. See LAW.
