BENDER, a town of Bessarabia in European Turkey, seated on the river Niesler, in E. Long. 29. 5. N. Lat. 46. 40. It is remarkable for being the place of retreat of Charles XII. after he was defeated by the Russians at the battle of Poltava in 1709.
