ANSPACH, THE MARQUISATE OF, a small territory of Franconia, in Germany, bounded on the north by the bishoprics of Wartburg and Bamberg, which last likewise lies to the west; by the earldoms of Holach and Oeting, with the bishopric of Eichstet, on the south; and the palatinate of Bavaria and the territory of Nuremberg on the east. The country is fruitful, and interspersed with woods, which render it agreeable for hunting. Besides the city Anspach, which is the capital, the chief towns are Kreglin, Swabach, Kreilheim, Rot, and Wasser-Truding.
