APPOINTEE, a foot soldier in the French army
before the revolution, &c. who for long service and bravely received pay above private sentinels. They were suppressed in France, except in the regiment of French guards, where forty appointees were retained to each company of 150 men.
Till the year 1670, they had also captains and lieutenants under the appellation of appointees, who, without residing in the regiment, received their pay.
