ARCHIACOLYTHUS (from αρχοντες, chief; and αρχιολυθος, minister), an ancient dignity in cathedral churches: the ministers whereof were divided into four orders or degrees, viz. priests, deacons, subdeacons, and acolythi: each of which had their chiefs. The chief of the acolythi was called archiacolythus.
