MARTIN, St, an island of America, and one of the Caribbees, lying on the gulf of Mexico, to the north-west of St Bartholomew, and to the south-west of Anguilla. It is 42 miles in circumference; has neither harbour nor river, but several salt pits. After various revolutions, it is at length in possession of the French and Dutch, who possess it conjointly. W.
