COURLAND, a duchy situated between E. Long.
21. 26. and between N. Lat. 56. 30. and 57. 30. It
is bounded by the river Dwina, which divides it from
Livonia, on the north; by Lithuania, on the east;
by Samogitia, on the south; and by the Baltic sea on
the west; being 120 miles long and 30 broad. This
