HOSPITALLERS, HOSPITALARI, an order of religious knights, who built an hospital at Jerusalem, wherein pilgrims were received. To these Pope Clement V. transferred the effects and revenues of the Templars; whom, by a council held at Vienne, he suppressed for their many and great misdeameours. These hospitalers were otherwise called Knights of St John of Jerusalem; and are the same with those whom we now call Knights of Malta.
