HOUSING, or Houssé, a cover laid over the saddle of a horse, in order to save it from the weather, dirt, &c. The word is formed of the French houffe, which signifies the same thing; though it anciently denoted a kind of hood worn by country people.—The cavaliers appeared with their embroidered housings.
