JALEMUS, in Antiquity, a kind of mournful song, used upon occasion of death, or any other affecting occurrence. Hence originated the Greek proverbs, ιαλμου βασιζει, or ψαχοριζει, sadder or colder than a jalemus; ις τας ιαλμους ιγχασιζει, worthy to be ranked among jalemuses.
