ALCALA DE HENARES, a city of Spain, in the province of New Castile. It is celebrated for its university, which is considered the best ecclesiastical school in the kingdom. It was founded by Cardinal Ximenes; and one of its first and best productions has been the Complutensian edition of the Holy Scriptures, which was prepared here. The river Henares runs by the city, and gives its distinguishing name. Here is also a military school for the artillery and engineer corps; 1600 houses, 4760 inhabitants. Its powder-mills produce 15 cwt. annually.
