ALTON, a market-town in the hundred of the same name, in the county of Hants, 47 miles from London and 18 from Winchester. It stands on the river Wye, and is a well-built place, with a good market on Saturday. Population in 1801, 2026; in 1811, 2316; and in 1821, 2499.
