ARISTARCHUS, a celebrated grammarian, much esteemed by Ptolemy Philometer, who committed to him the education of his son. He applied himself chiefly to criticism, and made a revival of Homer's poems, but in too magisterial a way; for such verses as he did not like he treated as spurious. He commented on other poets. Cicero and Horace made use of his name to express a very rigid critic.
