BERGEN, a circle in the Prussian province of Stralsund, comprehending the Island of Rugen, in the Baltic Sea, and the other small islands near it. It extends over about 365 square miles. There are some very ancient remains of antiquity on the principal island. It is very fertile, except on the northern part, where it is covered with wood. The inhabitants in 1817 were 27,089, living in four towns and sixty-seven villages. The capital, of the same name, contains 340 houses, and 2750 inhabitants. Long. 13. 29. E. Lat. 54. 50. N.
