BERLIN, a sort of vehicle, of the chariot kind, taking its name from the city of Berlin, in Germany; though some attribute the invention of it to the Italians, and derive the word from berlina, a name given by them to a sort of stage, on which persons are exposed to public shame. The berlin is a very convenient machine to travel in, being lighter, and less apt to be overturned, than a chariot. The body of it is hung high, on shafts, by leather braces; and there is a kind of stirrup or footstool for the convenience of getting into it. Instead of side-windows, some have screens to let down in bad and draw up in good weather.
