BIBLIOMANCY, a kind of divination performed by means of the Bible, otherwise called sortes biblicæ or sortes sanctorum. It consisted in taking passages of Scripture at hazard, and thence drawing indications, concerning the future; as in Augustin's tolle et lege. It was much used at the consecration of bishops.
