BLIND COAL, or ANTHRACITE, corresponds to the glance coal of England, and the stone coal of Wales. It is very common in Scotland, and is sufficiently abundant in Ireland. Being less frequent, and of more difficult inflammability, than the common coal, it is both of minor value and of less utility. It is, however, employed in burning lime, in iron foundries, and in smelting works. See COAL.
