AVALLON, an arrondissement in the department of the Yonne, in France, extending over 456 square miles, or 291,840 acres, and comprehending five cantons, divided into seventy communes, with 43,295 inhabitants. The capital of the arrondissement is of the same name. It is situated on a bed of granite, at the foot of which the river Voisen flows. It has some manufactures of cloth, hats, hosiery, leather, and paper, and a considerable traffic in fire-wood, which, by the Voisen and the Eure, is conveyed into the Seine, and floated to Paris.
