BACHMUT, a circle in the European Russian government of Catherine's. It is very extensive, including within it a very large portion of the steppes, which are destitute of wood and scantily supplied with water, but feed great numbers of sheep and oxen. The chief town, of the same name, contains about 5000 inhabitants, who are great dealers in and breeders of horses. Long. 38. 3. E. Lat. 48. 32. N.
